Cataracts place a barrier between your eyes and the rest of the world, causing your vision to become more clouded, blurred and otherwise impaired. While this problem can develop slowly, causing minimal trouble at first, over time you may eventually require cataract surgery. The good news is that cataract surgery can restore your vision to its former clarity. In the meantime, Dr. Ciano, Dr. Schuetz, and Dr. Wilson can provide valuable counsel and vision correction to help you optimize your eyesight. If you are in the Carmel or Westfield areas, we are here to provide you with high quality eye care services and help educate you on how you can prevent the progression of harmful eye diseases such as cataracts.
The lens of your eye is normally transparent and contains proteins. These proteins are held in a precise pattern that keeps them separated, allowing light to pass through to the interior of the eye. A cataract forms when some of these proteins lose their normal alignment and come together into solid, opaque clumps. This opacity increasingly affects vision over time as the lens takes on a milky or cloudy appearance. The interference with the normal passage of light may cause you to experience:
- Blurred vision
- Low or reduced vision, especially at night
- Reduced color vision
- Extreme sensitivity to bright lights and glare
- The appearance of starburst or halo patterns around light sources
A cataract that goes completely untreated can eventually result in blindness.
While some cataracts are related to health problems such as diabetes, substance abuse or certain prescription medications (and some are even congenital), most cataracts are a natural age-related occurrence — the byproduct of decades of exposure to UV rays. This means that sooner or later, almost everyone who lives long enough will experience some degree of cataract development.
Cataracts Treatment from Our Carmel Optometrists
A cataract diagnosis is no cause for panic. Age-related cataracts typically take a long time to develop. If you are diagnosed with early-stage cataracts, you may not even experience any of the usual symptoms for years to come. But it’s important to know about the situation so you can take appropriate countermeasures to slow the rate of progress. Our optometrists will perform annual eye exams and vision testing to monitor the cataracts’ progress, prescribing corrective lenses and updating the prescription as needed to help you keep seeing as clearly as possible. We can also provide UV-blocking glasses, contact lenses and sunglasses to help control your condition.
Once we can no longer correct your vision adequately, we may refer you to an eye surgeon for cataract surgery. This outpatient procedure is remarkably quick, simple and effective. Here at RevolutionEYES™, we can provide pre-operative counseling and post-operative checkups to help you enjoy optimal results. We proudly provide eye care services for those in Carmel, Westfield, and the surrounding areas!
